About  Antigua

Antigua is a tropical nine mile by twelve mile island located  approximately 300 miles southeast of Puerto Rico. The population of Antigua is estimated to be 85,000, most of whom have an African heritage as they are descendants of slaves who operated the sugar cane plantations. English is the official language although there is a growing Spanish speaking population.

Antigua, a British colony which gained its independence in 1981, now operates as a constitutional monarchy with a parliament system. The capital city is Saint John's. Tourism and government services account for over 80% of the economy. The strong British heritage still permeates many areas of life, including sports which is dominated by cricket.

Although Antigua is a common cruise destination there are many physical and spiritual needs represented among the residents. Despite the fact that there are many churches on the island of Antigua, the spiritual condition of the island is very needy. The majority of Antiguans claim to be Anglican, Seventh Day Adventist or Pentecostal. As a result of many churches on the island promoting a works-based salvation, the spiritual condition of the island is deteriorating, as is the exterior of the church pictured.
